Tolerance
There is a lot of mileage to be had, coasting in the celestial winds, from the fantasy of tolerance. If you have a stake in a society with massive, increasing inequality, the last thing you want is for people to become intolerant. So a way to pacify an increasingly secular and henceforth potentially dangerous population is to preach tolerance as a psuedo-virtue. A little extra frosting on that toxic cruel cake is used to help cover over the racism of the past. i.e. the diabetic fuel for creating and sustaining the economic inequality in the first place. Not only do you pacify the population by love-bombing them into internalizing values that are helpful mostly only if you own the mall, not shop at it, but you also sweeten the bitterness of history in the process: "It's good to be tolerant people!" Right hand comes up to face to make a little protective shield for an Aside/whisper "even though we weren't for a few hundred years there."
